SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0006] The present invention is a method and system for identifying a number of targets within a main beam of an antenna array that transmits the main beam and receives echo returns from the main beam.

The algorithm developed here updates the eigenstructure of covariance matrix of input and output data after every new measurement and gives a new parity space.

The presence of at least one target (120) within a single range cell (111) is detected.

A plurality of consecutive pulses are transmitted in a direction of the single range cell within a sufficiently short period that the at least one target remains within the single range cell while the plurality of consecutive pulses are transmitted.

An eigenvalue decomposition (180, 316) is updated each time the covariance matrix is updated.
